I would like to share this little tidbit my grandmother told my mother when she married, and my mother told me when I started my family.
"Now that you are married, YOUR family comes first. Whenever you make a decision, remember to base it on the welfare of your own family, not ours. And always remember, never make a decision out of guilt."
I'm sure it's very hard for a mother to tell her daughter these things. It must be so hard to let go of your child and encourage them to care more about their husband and children than they do about their own mother. Someday, I will be saying these words to my daughter and I'm sure it will secretly break my heart. But just as my mother and her mother knew, I will know it's for the benefit and solidarity of her new family, even if it means letting go.
